I feel like I don't have a plan for my hip...wish I had a better update. After waiting a month to hear from him, Dr. Kelly referred me to a pain specialist rather than taking me on as a patient. I still need to email/call my contact back at HSS to find out what the reasoning is. I don't think I will ever just send my medical records in to a doctor again. It is best to be there in person. I am trying not to freak out. I have had a ton of symptoms and tests done and guess that makes my situation not that clear cut. I've been kicking myself in the butt for ignoring my hip issues over the years. I knew I was running all lopsided and didn't have as good of ROM in my left hip but chose to ignore it. I'm stubborn and always push myself too much LOL.
I met with a pain management specialist on Tuesday (it took forever to get in to this guy!) He works at the Ohio State med center in their spine center, so my main reason to see him was to figure out the cause of the numbness I had from my left hip to my foot. Dr. Clohisy said that he did not recommend I let anyone operate until I know why my leg was numb so I have been on a bit of a quest trying to make sure I know the whole story about what is wrong with me. The pain specialist confirmed that I have piriformis syndrome (which explains the numbness and pain in my leg) and that he is not sure why it has taken so long for the other doctors to diagnose and treat me. He believes the hip problem and piriformis syndrome are 2 separate issues, however, both are to blame for my back pain. I asked his advice on why I have now had 2 top hip guys not want to take me on as a patient, both of which only saw my medical records. He thinks they see the back issues and numbness down the leg, along with all my other weird symptoms and various tests, and are probably questioning if it is truly the hip that is causing all the pain even if I have a structural deformity.
I asked advice from a fellow hip chick about why they would not want to take me on as a patient. She suggested that I look over all of my records and dictations and make sure everything looks right. I already knew that one of the hip surgeons gave me a Harris Hip score of 38.5 and this was in my records. This is a pretty low score and from what I understand, if you have a score under 50 the chances of having a failed surgery is greatly increased. I have been working hard at PT and am much stronger than I was when I saw the surgeon that gave me the low HH score.
My current plan is to continue PT on my left hip and knee. I will get my 1st of 3 rounds of cortisone injections in my piriformis muscle on Monday. I will continue to search for the right hip surgeon to fix me. I really like the idea of having a team work together since I have multiple issues. The pain specialist suggested I be seen by Dr. Ellis at Ohio State med center so I am going to see if I can get in for an office visit. It would be such a relief to have the 2 of them work together.
