Dr William Meyers office visit
I haven't been on here lately so this update is coming a bit late ;) my husband and I flew to Philadelphia On July 10 to meet with a surgeon who specializes in sports hernia/athletic pubalgia repairs. The next day I had to be up bright and early for a pelvic MRI. We went straight over to Dr Meyers' office afterwards. I thought the dr was really nice. The first thing Dr Meyers mentioned he saw on the MRI that was unusual was that my left TFL muscle is completely edematous. There does not appear to be a tear in the TFL and the surrounding muscles appear normal. He and his radiologist told me it was quite unusual and thought it could possibly be a chronic compartment syndrome. Dr Meyers also said I had small bilateral adductor tears and he felt one of the tears that is balled up on the inside of my thigh/pubic area. At one point he recommended an adductor release might be beneficial given how tight mine is... I believe he wanted to do it to the adductor longus. Dr Meyers ended up ordering a left hip MRA after examining my hips. He is concerned that something is still wrong with my op hip:( while manipulating my leg in a circular motion it catches and produces sharp searing pain. My hip surgeon also noticed this at my 7 week post op appointment. He said it was from a tight hip capsule. I'm definitely not improving as I should be and have had to go back to using 2 crutches lately.....some days are better and I only have to use my walking stick but still this shouldn't be happening at 3 months post op. I have had severe swelling the first 7 weeks or so and continue to have quite a bit of swelling. I guess this finding explains why all abductor exercises flare me up and increases the swelling!
The radiologist gave me an intra-articular injection into my left hip. He injected an anesthetic, contrast dye, and a very small dose of a steroid. The anesthetic was used as a test to see if my pain went away....and of course it did. All of the pain went away except for the pain over my TFL muscle. The reason why this is not good for me is because that means my hip is the source of the pain. The MRA didn't show anything wrong with my hip, so structurally it appears to be fixed and the labrum appears to be healing normally(which is great news!).
So the game plan for now is that Dr Meyers wants to set up a conference call with Dr Ellis(my hip surgeon) to discuss next steps. Dr Meyers believes there is still something wrong with my op hip and will not operate if that is the case.
